1957. Lord James Harrington and his wife, Beth, run a country hotel in the village of Cavendish, deep in the heart of West Sussex. James and Beth are discussing the latest Cavendish Players production, The Devil Incarnate, when their cleaner informs them that farmer Alec Grimes is missing.

It's 1958, and Lord James and his wife, Beth, are hosting the annual spring fair. Then wealthy recluse Delphine Brooks-Hunter is murdered. James is summoned to the reading of her will and is tasked with solving an intriguing riddle. Meanwhile, Beth tackles her own mystery after discovering a homeless man suffering from amnesia. As they delve deeper, a number of questions emerge. What links Delphine to the fairground folk? Who would harm such a refined lady? Are rumours of World War espionage true?

It’s summer, and the annual tennis tournament between Cavendish and Charnley is underway, but a sudden spate of jewel thefts prompts James to put his sleuthing hat on. His investigation suggests that the criminals are using an ancient smuggling network. Can he convince his good friend, DCI George Lane, of his suspicions? Has the smuggling network reopened? James learns that during the opening procession, a local fisherman vanished, and when further men disappear in broad daylight, he can't help but put his sleuthing hat on. The streets were crowded, yet no witnesses have come forward. If they were kidnapped, why is there no ransom demand? What are the flashing lights off the coastline? Have the Cornish Legends really come to life? James delves into the mystery, but his questions come at a price.

The Cavendish residents are discussing the traditional Easter festivities and egg hunt on the Harrington estate when the vicar’s dog digs up a bone. Retracing the dog’s walk, James uncovers a skeleton buried in the woods. Studying the remains, he identifies a number of expensive items. With the likelihood that the victim could be someone well to do, James puts his sleuthing hat on. But a chance conversation turns the whole enquiry on its head.

Having picked up a commendation from Sussex Police, Lord Harrington and his wife, Beth, are given a curious task by DCI George Lane - to observe Theodore Livingstone, Member of Parliament, who has a second home in Cavendish. James and Beth discover that Theodore is not to be crossed and that his son, Maximillian, is the editor of a salacious gossip magazine. Both are boorish men, driven by money and power. And when a body is discovered, with links to the Livingstone family, James puts his sleuthing skills to the test.

Lord James Harrington and his wife, Beth, happen upon a road accident where the driver, Bernard Potter, is seriously injured. While giving first-aid, Potter mumbles concerns about his daughter which James takes as the ramblings of a dying man. But, when visiting Mrs Potter, they realise that her husband, a police constable, was secretly investigating the goings-on at a local commune where his daughter lived.
