Summary

What if the medieval saga of King Arthur wasn’t a myth? From master storyteller and historian Bernard Cornwell, The Warlord Chronicles tells the full, real story of the legendary man.

Weaving together history and legend, The Warlord Chronicles delivers the most fascinating version of the King Arthur story ever told. Set in Dark Age Britain, the series starts after King Uther has died, and the infant Mordred sits on the throne unchallenged. As the country falls into chaos, Arthur returns from banishment. In this trilogy, many familiar faces from Arthurian legend—Lancelot, Guinevere, and Merlin among them—make an appearance, but there are plenty of surprises too. The mythic tales are fleshed out in new ways that will excite listeners who are well-versed in Arthurian lore as well as those just discovering the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

Acclaimed for his best-selling works of historical fiction—including The Last Kingdom series, adapted for the screen by Netflix—author Bernard Cornwell shows how the story of King Arthur could have actually happened with impeccable research and vivid details. If Arthur had been a real person—and Cornwell is quite certain he was—then this is how the legendary man would have lived and ruled.

The Warlord Chronicles begin with The Winter King, which traces Arthur's return to the kingdom and ascension to the throne. The second novel, Enemy of God delves into conflicts within the kingdom, including the tension between traditional pagans and Christians and Britain's war with the Saxons. In Excalibur, the trilogy comes to its astonishing end as Arthur makes his final attempts to beat the Saxons while also coping with his ruined marriage and dreams destroyed.

The entire trilogy is read by Jonathan Keeble, a familiar voice to fans of Cornwell's audiobooks and other action-packed works of history and fantasy. Listeners have praised Keeble's narration as “excellent,” “wonderful,” and “amazing.” His performance brings the beloved epic and its iconic characters fully to life, with the right mix of energy, passion, and authenticity.
