A massive explosion in New Mexico created an epidemic known as Living Death that spread worldwide. It infected billions with pneumonia-like symptoms, who soon died after catching it. They came back from death as something that was no longer human. Their only basic instincts are killing and feeding off of the living. A small group of survivors came together fighting against all odds to live. The story continues where it left off, only now Jessie is telling the story.

Rye and Jessie previously shared with us their journeys from the beginning throughout the apocalyptic world that is now full of the undead known as the Fallen. Fifteen years later, their daughter Ember continues the story through her eyes (eyes that never knew the world the way it was before the epidemic decimated almost all of the human population.

I saw the human race fall and monsters arise in their place. Millions of these creatures attacked those humans who remained, devouring flesh with an insatiable hunger. They tore flesh from the bone, drenching their rage with blood. They had no remorse, no guilt, and served no purpose except bringing death wherever they went. I had nightmares for more than five years every night after it all began. I would wake up screaming, which, as you can imagine, is an extremely bad thing with Fallen around every corner. 

The story continues where Bloody Eventide, the first book in the Ember series, left off. Ember is still searching for Sandra, hunting the elusive Ashe, and plotting revenge and justice for her lost loved ones. She is far from the place that she once called home, but the apocalyptic world full of Fallen (dead that have risen, becoming something else) that she has known from birth is still the same, wherever she goes.
