There are many methods for developing the “sense of symbols” in those who are striving to understand the hidden forces of Nature and Man, and for teaching the fundamental principles as well as the elements of the esoteric language. The most synthetic, and one of the most interesting of these methods, is the Tarot.

The book is, in Wells' words, a "scheme to thrust forward and establish a human control over the destinies of life and liberate it from its present dangers, uncertainties and miseries. It proposes that largely as the result of scientific progress, a common vision of a world 'politically, socially and economically unified' is emerging among educated and influential people, and that this can be the basis of 'a world revolution aiming at universal peace, welfare and happy activity' that can result in the establishment of a 'world commonwealth'."

The Wonders of the Invisible World was a book written by Cotton Mather and published in 1693. It was subtitled, Observations As well Historical as Theological, upon the Nature, the Number, and the Operations of the Devils. The book defended Mather’s role in the witch hunt conducted in Salem, Massachusetts. It espoused the belief that witchcraft was an evil magical power.

Annie Wood Besant (1847-1933) was a prominent Theosophist, women’s rights activist, writer, and orator. She was born in London into a middle-class family of Irish origin. She fought for the causes she thought were right, starting with freedom of thought, women’s rights, secularism (she was a leading member of the National Secular Society), birth control, Fabian socialism, and workers’ rights. Soon, she was earning a small weekly wage by writing a column for the National Reformer, the newspaper of the National Secular Society. She was also one of the leading figures in Theosophy.

In the tract on Liberty, Mill is advocating the rights of the individual as against Society at the very opening of an era that was rapidly coming to the conclusion that the individual had no absolute rights against Society. The eighteenth century view is that individuals existed first, each with their own special claims and responsibilities: that they deliberately formed a Social State, either by a contract or otherwise, and that then finally they limited their own action out of regard for the interests of the social organism thus arbitrarily produced.

The Third and Last Book of Magick, or Occult Philosophy – Henry Cornelius Agrippa. Now it is time to turn our pen to higher matters, and to that part of magick which teacheth us to know and perfectly understand the rules of religion, and how we ought to obtain the truth by divine religion, and how rightly to prepare our mind and spirit. By which only we can comprehend the truth. For it is a common opinion of the magicians that unless the mind and spirit be in good case, the body cannot be in good health.

In the design of this book, three primary themes interlace and pursue and develop each other. There is first, that invention and science have completely altered the material environment of human life.
