Le macchine intelligenti sorvegliano la vita quotidiana; le automobili e le farmacie parlano e litigano con gli utenti, e molti, in modo ossessivo, giocano a Bluff, un gioco di gruppo che accoppia in modo sempre diverso gli individui, creando e sciogliendo matrimoni senza interruzione, in una paradossale lotteria che premia la fortuna dell'ambita fertilità.

Come sarebbe, si domanda Philip Dick, un mondo nato dalla vittoria dell'Asse nella Seconda guerra mondiale? Chi governerebbe il Reich? Cambierebbe qualcosa? Cambierebbe qualcosa per lui, Phil Dick, scrittore proletario e depresso, residente a Point Reyes, nella Contea di Marin? Partendo da quest'idea, poi divenuta un classico della letteratura, Dick non immagina un ipotetico futuro quanto un diverso passato e il presente che ne deriva.

Le sigarette si fumano a partire dalle cicche, si saluta il prossimo con un "addio" e ci si congeda con un "ciao", a tavola si dà di stomaco invece di mangiare. Alcune ditte specializzate, i "vitarium", si occupano di prelevare dai cimiteri i defunti che ritornano al mondo.

In "Follia per sette clan" Dick si tramuta, in quanto scrittore di fantascienza, in psicologo/ psichiatra che utilizza la sua creatura letteraria come atto terapeutico sia per i suoi personaggi che per i lettori, organizzando un viaggio dentro le psicosi della mente, o meglio – grazie alla duttilità della fantascienza – su Alfa III L2, una luna ospitante i ‘lunatici’, vale a dire, non coloro colpiti da malattia provocata (come una volta si credeva) dal mutamento dei cicli lunari, bensì coloro che, diagnosticati ‘folli’ sulla terra, sono stati allontanati (allunati?) su un satellite remoto e isolato.

The story is simple enough on the surface (and perhaps a little too gimmicky in its ending), but what sticks with the reader is the woman's profound frustration, the comic dull stupidity of her husband and father-in-law, and the way nature itself calls, through her many manifestations, to the unquellable sensuality in all of us.

Williamson's World was settled by Frank Williamson in the first attempt to establish a Terran colony outside of the solar system. No future evidence of his colony was found and it was presumed lost and it remained so for three hundred years. Rogers meets a young man after landing who assumes immediately he is from the Galactic Relay Center. He identifies himself as Gene Williamson (the great-great-great-great-grandson of Frank Williamson).
