Lord und Lady Greystoke sind angesehene Mitglieder der Londoner Gesellschaft, und ihrem kleinen Sohn Jack, dem künftigen Lord of Greystoke, wird eine standesgemäße Erziehung zuteil. Zum Leidwesen des Kindermädchens aber gebärdet sich Jack oft recht wild. Er spielt Gorilla und erschreckt die Ärmste damit. Begeistert verschlingt er Berichte über Afrika, den Urwald und wilde Tiere. Lady Jane bemerkt das mit Sorge. Jack weiß nicht, dass seine Eltern noch unter anderen Namen bekannt sind, nämlich als Tarzan und Jane.

Angosa war ein kleines, schmutziges Nest inmitten einer wilden, gefährlichen Umgebung, über 170 Meilen vom Sitz des Gouverneurs und fast 200 Meilen von der Küste entfernt. Die englisch-französische Firma Priscott & Company in Lokoja entsandte daraufhin einen Schürftrupp unter Leitung des erfahrenen George McCoy nach Zanaho. Einmal im Monat schickte Priscott eine Trägerkolonne mit Medikamenten, Lohngeldern, Lebensmitteln, Werkzeugen, Perlen und Stoffen von Lokoja aus nach Zanaho, wo inzwischen außer neun Weißen auch hundert Eingeborene arbeiten.

Tarzan war auf dem Weg zu einem befreundeten Stamm der Waziris. Neun Tage hatte er sich für diesen Weg vorgenommen. Doch bereits in der zweiten Nacht geschah es: Er wurde von einem furchtbaren Gewitter überrascht. Ein Blitz spaltete den Baum, in dessen Geäst er es sich zum Übernachten bequem gemacht hatte, und er wurde in die Tiefe geschleudert. Dank seiner ausgezeichneten körperlichen Verfassung und der Hilfe des Eingeborenen Orando überlebte er den Sturz.

Tarzan empfindet das mehr oder weniger zivilisierte und geruhsame Leben in Paris in steigendem Maße als Last. Seine Unruhe wächst von Tag zu Tag, ebenso seine Sehnsucht nach dem früheren ungebundenen Leben im Urwald. Da beschließt sein Freund Paul d'Arnot, zu handeln. Nach mehreren Gesprächen mit Freunden aus dem Kriegsministerium findet man gemeinsam eine Lösung: Tarzan soll als Sonderbeauftragter des französischen Kriegsministeriums nach Afrika reisen.
