I did not, of course, get Apauk’s story of his life in the sequence in which it is here laid down. On consecutive evenings he would relate incidents far apart in time, and only by later questionings would I be able to fill in the gaps. But at last I got together the whole of it, to my own satisfaction, and I hope the listener may get as much pleasure from the story as I did in the hearing of it.

The Hopi Currently number about 10,000 people. They are made of many clans each varying in their details of the stories of myths of their people. So this is not a book of the Hopi. It is the book or truth of a hopi or group sharing the same beliefs. They are a people who believe themselves to have a responsibility for keeping the whole world in balance by living in harmony at the center. So the failure of their imbalance is reflected in the world. This little book in fact begins with the last world being in a state of great imbalance and the strong intent to move out of that state.

As the human form, generally, corresponds to the human will, generally, so the individual bodily structure corresponds to the character, desires, will, and thought of the individual. Therefore the outer nature is nothing but the expression of the inner nature. This inner nature of each individual is what re-incarnates or expresses itself successively in various forms, one after another. When a man dies the individual ego or Jîva (as it is called in Sanskrit), which means the germ of life or the living soul of man, is not destroyed, but it continues to exist in an invisible form.

The soul must be eternal. Why? In the first place we see that the soul is not matter. It is neither a gross body, nor a fine body, which we call mind or thought. It is neither a physical body, nor what in Christianity is called a spiritual body. It is the gross body and the spiritual body that are liable to change. The gross body is liable to change almost every minute and dies, but the spiritual body endures through long periods, until one becomes free, when it also falls away.
