Holmes und Dr. Watson erhalten ein seltsam gereimtes Gedicht, indem von fünf Freunden berichtet wird. Der Verfasser schwört Rache zu nehmen, für die erlittenen Schmerzen, Schmach und Häme. Gleich darauf taucht das erste, auf grausame Weise, getötete Opfer auf. Nun gilt es für Holmes und Dr. Watson schnell die Identität zu klären, doch da erhalten die Beiden bereits das zweite Gedicht und somit auch das zweite Opfer. Die Zeit rennt, denn der Täter mordet in einem wahnsinnigen Tempo. Auch nach dem dritten Opfer fehlen Holmes und Watson jegliche Anhaltspunkte.

Nachdem Holmes und Watson das Rätsel um die Identität des ersten Opfers glücklicherweise rasch klären konnten, dauert es nicht lange und die beiden erhalten ein weiteres Gedicht. Anhand der Reime ist für Holmes schnell klar, wo der Mann zu finden sein wird. Doch kommen Sie auch hier zu spät! Holmes und Watson hoffen nun, schnellstmöglich eine Verbindung zwischen den Opfern herstellen zu können, um weitere Morde zu verhindern.

Während Holmes und Watson Himmel und Hölle in Bewegung setzen, um Alice noch rechtzeitig zu finden, sieht sie sich mit den tödlichen Schatten ihrer Vergangenheit konfrontiert.

Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson erhalten ein anonymes Schreiben. In dem Gedicht wird von fünf Freunden berichtet, die einander verrieten. Der Verfasser kündigt an, Rache zu nehmen. Mit der beigelegten Schwarzweißfotografie in Ihren Händen, beschließen Holmes und Watson Inspektor Wolfford aufzusuchen. Dieser kann es zuerst gar nicht richtig glauben. Der Mann auf dem Bild ist doch tatsächlich derselbe, der heute Morgen, direkt vor Scotland Yard, in einem geparkten Auto, tot aufgefunden wurde.
