L. Frank Baums "Dot and Tot of Merryland" erschien 1901, ein Jahr nach "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", und Baum und sein Illustrator W. W. Denslow erhofften sich von dem neuen Buch einen ähnlichen Erfolg. Der blieb aber zu ihrer Enttäuschung aus; das Buch geriet neben den "Oz"-Geschichten nahezu in Vergessenheit. 1994 hat es der New Yorker Verlag The Emerald City Press in seiner Reihe "Books of Wonder" neu aufgelegt (mit Bildern von Donald Abbott).

"Dorothy und der Zauberer in Oz" ist ein Kinderbuch des US-amerikanischen Schriftstellers Lyman Frank Baum. Die Erzählung erschien 1908 unter dem Originaltitel "Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz" mit Illustrationen von John R. Neill. Dabei handelt es sich um den vierten Band des Oz-Zyklus, der in den USA zu den beliebtesten Kinderbüchern gehört und zum Teil auch in deutscher Sprache verlegt wurde. Dorothy kommt mit dem Zug und ihrer Katze Eureka nach Hugson in Kalifornien, wo sie Onkel Bill Hugson besuchen will, bei dem sich gerade Onkel Henry aufhält.

Folklore, Legenden, Mythen und Märchen sind der Kindheit durch die Zeiten gefolgt, denn jedes normale Kind hat eine gesunde und instinktive Liebe zu phantastischen, erstaunlichen und offenkundig unwirklichen Geschichten. Grimms und Andersens geflügelte Elfen haben kindlichen Herzen mehr Glücksgefühle beschert als alle anderen menschlichen Hervorbringungen. Doch das alte Märchen, das Generationen gedient hat, wird jetzt wohl als "historisch" in der Kinderbibliothek geführt.

One day he takes a horse to a pasture in the countryside, where he tosses his lasso at imaginary targets. To his surprise, it catches an invisible object. On close inspection, Jim sees that he has caught an old man with a bald head and a long white beard, dressed in a white robe and carrying an hourglass. It was Father Time!
