James Joyce's Dubliners is a collection of short stories about the lives of the people of Dublin around the turn of the century. Each story describes a small but significant moment of crisis or revelation in the life of a particular Dubliner, sympathetically but always with stark honesty. Many of the characters are desperate to escape the confines of their humdrum lives, though those that have the opportunity to do so seem unable to take it.

The first novel by James Joyce, this semi-autobiographical narrative depicts the life of Stephen Dedalus, a character created as an allusion to Daedalus, a craftsman in Greek mythology. Beginning by depicting the early stages of Stephen's life, the language of the novel grows with the main character as he awakens sexually and rebels against religion. When he realizes that Ireland is restricting him, he commits to a self-imposed exile and travels elsewhere to grow as an artist - but not before declaring Ireland his homeland.

NBC University Theater initially started in Chicago with a remit to bring adaptations of classic novels, usually Anglo-American, to a radio audience. Wenigstens der Plan mit dem Bazarbesuch funktioniert und so tritt er tapfer alleine eine Zugreise an und betritt mutig den pulsierenden Mittelpunkt des öffentlichen Gesellschaftslebens.

Ein Dubliner Junge verabredet sich mit seinem besten Kumpel, um außerhalb des ihnen langweiligen Schuluniversums sich irgendwo im Unbekannten herumzutreiben und spannende Abenteuer zu erleben. Mit Steinschleuder und ein paar Pennies ausgerüstet ziehen sie los, stellen ein paar zerlumpten Mädchen nach, überlegen sich ein paar noch kleinere Jungen zu massakrieren, jagen eine Katze und ruhen sich schließlich bei einer Johannisbeerlimonade aus.

Die Hauptfigur dieser Geschichte ist ein Dubliner Junge, dessen tristes Dasein im monotonen Alltag durch die lose Freundschaft mit einem Priester etwas aufgelockert wird. Durch diesen Gottesdiener bekommt er Bruchstücke religiös-kirchlicher Standard-Vorgänge vermittelt, mit denen er eigentlich weder etwas anzufangen noch nützlich einzuordnen weiß. Als dieser Priester stirbt, nimmt der als Ich-Erzähler auftretende Junge ebenfalls an dem Gedächtnistreffen für den Verstorbenen teil, bei dem die Begräbniskosten geklärt und Gedenkworte ausgetauscht werden.

The story centres on Gabriel Conroy, a professor and part-time book reviewer, and explores the relationships he has with his family and friends. Gabriel and his wife, Gretta, arrive late to an annual Christmas party hosted by his aunts, Kate and Julia Morkan, who eagerly receive him.

Zwei Freunde treiben sich in der Nacht herum. Einer der beiden behauptet, später noch mit einer jungen Frau verabredet zu sein. Das weckt die Neugierde des anderen und sie vereinbaren sich nach dem Date nochmal zu treffen, um über den natürlich erfolgreichen noch ausstehenden „Abschuss“ zu plaudern.

Die Mutter tot, der Vater ein Säufer, der Bruder meistens auf angeblich beruflichen Reisen, der Alltag hart, monoton und triste – was könnte Eveline da an ihre Heimat binden? Und der Matrose Frank hat ein nettes kleines Häuslein in Buenos Aires und bittet sie mit ihm zu kommen, dennoch fällt Eveline ein endgültiger Entschluss schwer.
