Einige Minuten schien der Alte zu erschöpft, um zu sprechen. „Vor drei Jahren noch“, sagte er schließlich, „hätte ich diesen Weg geradeso leicht und ohne Ermüdung gemacht wie der jüngste meiner Söhne; aber dann hatte ich ein Erlebnis, wie wohl noch kein Sterblicher vor mir hatte – wenigsten wie keiner es überlebte, um davon zu berichten – und die sechs Stunden tödlichen Entsetzens, die ich damals durchmachte, haben mich an Leib und Seele gebrochen.

Es ist wahr! Nervös, schrecklich nervös war ich und bin ich noch; aber weshalb soll ich wahnsinnig sein? Mein Übel hatte meine Sinne nur geschärft, nicht zerstört oder abgestumpft. Vor allem war mein Gehörsinn außerordentlich empfindlich geworden. Ich hörte alle Dinge, die im Himmel und auf der Erde vor sich gingen, und auch vieles, was in der Hölle geschah.

Ich verlange und erwarte nicht, dass man die höchst seltsame und doch einfache Geschichte, die ich hier niederschreiben will, glaubt. Es wäre auch töricht, dies zu tun, denn ich selbst vermag dem Zeugnis meiner Sinne kaum zu trauen. Doch bin ich weder wahnsinnig noch habe ich geträumt. Morgen aber muss ich sterben und möchte darum heute meine Seele entlasten.
