En julafton ger sig den gamla storbonden Ingmar Ingmarsson ut i skogen för att skära vidjor. Isande vindar tränger igenom hans kläder, och när snön börjar yra går han plötsligt vilse. Han kämpar mot den bitande kylan och det skiftande landskapet, men när mörkret faller tar hans krafter slut. Utmattad faller han ihop på en rishög, och i det ögonblick han är på väg att ge upp börjar rishögen att röra sig under honom.
