Classic Tales of Fear presents two classics of horror. An old pilot of the sea who had been driven by tempests "he knew not wither" returns to Lisbon to tell of a wonderful lost island that his ship had been driven to by a storm. The public immediately names this island, the "The Island of the Seven Cities." and there was much talk of its wealth.

The Devil and Tom Walker is a classic short story by Washington Irving. When you make a deal with the devil you have to shake his hand. At the time Tom made his deal, it seemed like a good idea, but as Tom aged and death approached, he became very pious and even carried two Bibles with him. His historical works include biographies of George Washington, Oliver Goldsmith and Muhammad, and several histories of 15th century Spain dealing with subjects such as Christopher Columbus, the Moors, and the Alhambra. Irving served as the U.S. ambassador to Spain from 1842 to 1846. Irving made his literary debut in 1802 with a series of observational letters to the Morning Chronicle, written under the pseudonym Jonathan Oldstyle.

Two American classics which tell of the earliest days in Dutch New York: Ichabod Crane's encounter with the Headless Horseman and Rip's long nap. Washington Irving, the first American writer to make his living by his profession, was born April 3, 1783. At the age of 6, he was introduced to his namesake, George Washington. He studied law but then was sent to Europe because of his health and was to spend 17 years abroad. When he was 35 his family's business went bankrupt. It was then that he began to support himself by writing. He wrote letters, essays and short fiction.
