The Mark on the Wall is the first published story by Virginia Woolf. It was published in 1917 as part of the first collection of short stories written by Virginia Woolf and her husband, Leonard Woolf, called Two Stories. It was later published in New York in 1921 as part of another collection entitled Monday or Tuesday. The Mark on the Wall is written in the first person, as a "tream of consciousness" monologue. The narrator notices a mark on the wall, and muses on the workings of the mind.

Clarissa Dalloway is preoccupied with the last-minute details of a party she is to give that evening. Pubblicato nel 1928, è ispirato alla storia familiare della sua amica intima Vita Sackville-West. È, a ragione, l’opera più popolare della Woolf: una storia dell'Inghilterra dell'arco di trecento anni, vista attraverso il filtro dei sentimenti, usi e abitudini di un uomo, che poi diventa donna a metà del romanzo. Non di poca importanza la passione che spinge il protagonista ad attraversare ogni avventura: la scrittura, la poesia, e che permette alla Woolf di scrivere nel suo modo ironico e geniale di poesia e di letteratura ella stessa.
