A brutal winter storm sweeps through the mountains of New England, forcing a young man to seek shelter. A kind family welcomes him into their humble home, tucked away in a remote mountain pass. The traveler is the story’s eponymous “Ambitious Guest”, as he tells the family about his aspiration to make a mark on the world. The evening takes an ironic turn, however, when an avalanche heads straight for the house in this story based on the real-life Willey family tragedy.

This tale follows eight individuals all searching for the Great Carbuncle, a legendary red gemstone. These wildly disparate individuals camp together one night in the White Mountains, united by their shared desire for the stone. Aylmer has a great career as a scientist and a beautiful new wife, Georgiana. There’s only one problem - Georgiana has a small red birthmark on her cheek. Aylmer grows increasingly disgusted with the birthmark and becomes obsessed with removing the one thing barring his wife from perfection.

The Scarlet Letter: A Romance, an 1850 novel, is a work of historical fiction written by American author Nathaniel Hawthorne. The book is considered to be his "masterwork." Set in 17th-century Puritan Massachusetts Bay Colony, during the years 1642 to 1649, it tells the story of Hester Prynne, who conceives a daughter through an affair and struggles to create a new life of repentance and dignity. A collection of four short stories by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the common theme of which is New Hampshire's White Mountains. Consists of: "The Great Stone Face", written in 1850 and revolves around the "Old Man of the Mountain" (Cannon Mtn.) in New Hampshire which sadly collapsed on May 3, 2003; "The Ambitious Guest", written in 1835; "The Great Carbuncle", written in 1837; and "Sketches From Memory", written sometime prior to "The Great Carbuncle" as will become obvious.

Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) was born in Salem, Massachusetts. His ancestors include John Hathorne, the only judge involved in the Salem witch trials who never repented of his actions. Nathaniel later added W to make his name Hawthorne in order to hide his relation. The Scarlet Letter, his most famous novel, was published in 1850, followed by a succession of other novels, including The House of the Seven Gables, and various short stories. "The British Matron" is a satirical essay.
