Heart of Darkness is a novella written by Joseph Conrad. Before its 1903 publication, it appeared as a three-part series (1899) in Blackwood's Magazine. It was classified by the Modern Library website editors as one of the "100 best novels" and part of the Western canon. The story centres on Charles Marlow, who narrates most of the book. But he has not come to the end of his troubles yet and the community keeps him at arm’s length, terrified of his very difference.

Joseph Conrad lived an exciting and eventful life as a seaman, and as a writer he possessed a unique insight into human psychology, which is clearly reflected in his fictional works as well as in his essays.

Charles Marlow, sails up the Congo River to meet with Kurtz a prosperous ivory trader and a man of great abilities. Marlow ends up signing a contract and becoming a riverboat captain for a Belgian company that trades in the Congo. He hopes that this contract will give him a good opportunity for career development. However, Marlows expectations quickly sour as he is faced with the evil of imperialism, witnessing violent acts and brutality against the local, native population.

Classic shortish story by Conrad that relates his self-thought alienation from British society, as a young foreign man survives a shipwreck off the coast of Kent, England only to be shunned by most of the townsfolk. The one exception is the loving, if dull-witted, Miss Foster.

Many hybrid forms of the mystery-crime-thriller genre exists. All of them are narratives that keep one in suspense about what is about to happen. The thriller also shares a literary lineage with ancient epic and myth populated by monsters, terror and danger. Alexandre Dumas, Alfred Hitchcock, and Robert Ludlum are some of the masters of the genre.

Hounded by an act of cowardice that follows him constantly, Jim wanders the world and eventually settles in the Far East. Here, slowly but surely, he comes to terms with his inner turmoil through acts of courage and leadership. But have the psychological demons that haunt him finally been exorcised? Listeners should be aware that the text contains racial epithets of the period that may be offensive to some of today's listeners.
