One morning Josef K. is arrested for a crime he did not commit. In fact, he is never even told the nature of the offense. His life is thrown into turmoil as he becomes enmeshed in a struggle to prove his innocence. As the confounding case unfolds, K. is ultimately powerless—battling against a remote and uncaring bureaucracy.

The Metamorphosis begins as its protagonist, Gregor Samsa, wakes up one morning to find that he has become a huge insect. This change is understandably difficult for Gregor, not to mention his family and business. It ends up costing him his life.

The first of Kafka’s three great novels, The Man Who Disappeared (America) follows the picaresque adventures of Karl Rossman, who is banished to America following a family scandal. Upon his arrival, Karl immediately happens upon his uncle, and from there follows a pattern of wandering, adoption and expulsion as Karl marches inexorably on towards the interior of the continent. With its blitheness and comical moments, The Man Who Disappeared is perhaps the most charming of Kafka’s works.

Gregor Samsa, a seemingly average salesman and cloth merchant, awakes one morning to find himself transformed into a monstrous insect. Trapped inside his new grotesque form, Gregor struggles to hold down his job and maintain his place in the family who become increasingly wary of him, frightful of his new body. Soon Gregor is unable to communicate at all, and becomes fearful he will forget his human side altogether.

Dessen Vaterkonflikt trat nie offener zutage als in seinem berühmten Brief an den Vater, der allerdings nie abgeschickt wurde. Noch heute ein unabdingbarer Bestandteil der Schullektüre!

Det er en lidt anderledes udgave af Grimms eventyr, vi finder i denne bog, hvor der er gjort meget ud af at fortælle for børn. Især er der lagt vægt på, at sproget skal være letforståeligt, og så er der blevet plads til lidt mere humor, end man normalt finder i de gamle folkeeventyr. Der er også skåret en del i de meget grusomme straffe, så de bliver knap så grusomme. En særdeles børnevenlig og højtlæsningsegnet udgave af brødrene Grimms eventyr – også for mindre børn.
