Sam takes on an odd case: he's hired to track down a man who has been thought to be dead for more than 40 years but recently showed up alive to visit his dying mother. Now his daughter, who never even met him, wants to ask him where he's been all this time and why she grew up without him in her life.

"Mr. Prichard," the note said, "the people you see in the photos will be killed within the next 48 hours, unless you stop me. I have been following your exploits closely, and I think that you are the one I need to make sure I stop doing this. I've been trying for more than 15 years to kick this habit, but I can't. Normally, I don't strike so many times so close together, but in order to get you interested, I'm going to up the odds. I need you to do only two things: discover who each of my victims is, and then do all you can to stop me before I can kill each one.

Sam Prichard has recovered from his last mission to save the world, and is back to being a normal private eye. He's decided there's something fishy going on, but then he wakes up and finds that one of his clients is dead, and he is the only possible suspect.

The evidence comes together, and leads to the discovery of the missing body parts on the estate of a well-known talent agent.

Doctors had actually pronounced him dead, in fact, but Sam was too stubborn to let them give up and the cantankerous old man came back. But was the case really closed? One of the perpetrators was being protected by the British government, and someone else had stepped up to replace the assassin who had been running the operation. When one of the clients from the case is kidnapped, Sam knows that it isn't really over yet.

The old ghost claims to know that his own descendants are in danger, but he doesn't know who they are or how to find them, so Sam is forced to delve into history to try to track them down.
