Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) was one of the most successful and respected English novelists. Malachi's Cove tells the story of Mally, the granddaughter of an old seaweed collector, who takes over the family trade as her "Dada" becomes too old and infirm to carry on. Mally is plagued by interlopers from local farms who come down to collect seaweed in her cove. One in particular, Barty Gunliffe, she resents above all others.

This little gem of a novella manages to include a number of the same themes found in the longer novels in a much more compact form. Young Bessie falls in love with a man "above her station" and, although the love is returned, the social implications lead to many trials and tribulations before true love conquers all.

Anthony Trollope is known primarily for his epic novels like Barchester Towers. However, he also wrote a number of smaller "gems". This is one of the best. Alice Dugdale is a plain but intelligent girl who sees the love of her life pushed by society to marry the beautiful, but somewhat vacuous, rich girl in town. Alice's reaction to this situation makes a wonderful and insightful story.

Miss Mackenzie by Trollope was the runner-up in Radio 4's 'Neglected Classics' vote. Margaret Mackenzie is a single woman in her mid-thirties who receives a large inheritance when her brother dies. She must then deal with what comes with the fortune, including several suitors, who may, or, may not, simply be after her money.

The charming heir to an earldom has an affair with a sweet young lady of inferior background. She becomes pregnant - and the consequences may not be what one would usually expect from Mr. Trollope's pen.

'Malachi’s Cove' tells the story of Mally Trenglos and Barry Gunliffe, who both earn their living by gathering seaweed. They are sworn enemies unit la near fatal accident seals their fate forever. Father Giles of Ballymoy is a hospitable Irish priest whose strange ways are at first misinterpreted by an English visitor.

One of Trollope's best short novels tells of a father's vacillation over his daughter's wish to marry his nephew, who is a scamp and a wastrel. Although a sad tale, it is nonetheless brightened with Trollope's inevitable touches of humor.

The novel follows the Dales, a family who occupies a large estate. Christopher is the owner of the estate, and allows his widowed sister and her children to live on a small house on the property. The novel largely follows the children, Lilian and Isabella, as they are courted and try to find their place among society.
