Tragedy falls upon the House of Humblethwaite. Sir Harry Hotspur's son dies at 21 years of age. There is no other male heir save a second cousin, a scapegrace seemingly beyond redemption.

The intrigues of peaceful Barchester are of tremendous importance to its inhabitants, and Anthony Trollope enjoys observing how differently they impinge on the separate worlds of men and women. Men have to make a place for themselves in society; for them ambition is necessary and justified. Women, on the other hand, have to make marriage their career, and it is up to them to make as good a match as possible. For Trollope, however, genuine love is of the utmost importance to everyone and the only real basis for marriage.

Anthony Trollope’s The Small House at Allington is the fifth book in a series called The Chronicles of Barsetshire but is the most well-known of the series due to its writing quality and timeline placement within the series. The novel follows the Dales, a family who occupies a large estate. Christopher is the owner of the estate, and allows his widowed sister and her children to live on a small house on the property. The novel largely follows the children, Lilian and Isabella, as they are courted and try to find their place among society.

The discovery of an irregularity in the marriage of a newly hired assistant headmaster and matron at Dr. Wortle's school tests the character of all involved and takes this story from the British countryside across the pond to the Wild West. Caution, this story includes some racial epithets that some of today's listeners may find offensive. Also included with this book is Trollope's charming short story, "Malachi's Cove".

In the last of the six novels in the Chronicles of Barsetshire series Trollope relates the story of the impecunious curate Josiah Crawley who is falsely accused of stealing a cheque. The community is divided between the supporters and the accusors of the curate, the latter group including one of Trollope's most memorable characters, the formidable Mrs Proudie.

Anthony Trollope's autobiography will delight you whether or not you've read (or listened to) any of his many works. His honest if self-deprecating tone is at times hilarious and at times piteously moving. His detailed descriptions of his writing process and his philosophy of writing as work rather than art are fascinating. Fans of Trollope will enjoy learning the man's perceptions of his novels' shortcomings and triumphs.
