J. Franklin Jameson helped found the American Historical Association (1884), and was the first managing editor of the American Historical Review. He also wrote The American Revolution Considered as a Social Movement (1926) and invited W. E. B. Du Bois to present a paper concerning Reconstruction at the 1909 AHA meeting. With Waldo Leland, he started lobbying Congress to create the National Archives, the building for which was first funded in 1926.

A Generation of American Historiography by William A. Dunning is a nice overview of book trends and the histories and historians in the decades (a generation) prior to 1900, when most historians were male and white, of course … but not all.

Mary Wollstonecraft is the author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), one of the earliest works of feminist philosophy. She has been called Britain’s first feminist. Her daughter Mary Shelley is the author of the novel Frankenstein (1818). This biography was written by Elizabeth Robin Pennell. It was her first book, written before she was thirty. She was married that year to illustrator and artist Joseph Pennell.

We all know of Theodore Roosevelt being the US president from 1901 to 1909, an American politician, statesman, soldier, conservationist, and naturalist. But few know of him being an acclaimed historian. Roosevelt’s The Winning of the West quickly became a bestseller. The first edition of his book sold out in little more than a month and helped establish Roosevelt as a literary man and scholar, placing him on a path toward future greatness.

This is a lovely piece of history of the renowned zoo. Easily noted are the magnificent donations of Ellen B. Scripps and the great time and energy of Dr. Harry Wegeforth among others.

Indian lore of the Cuyamaca Mountains and surrounding region in San Diego County, California, abounds in myths and legends handed down from generation to generation by tribal song and squaw-tale. Yet so swiftly has the hand of civilization wiped out the old traditions and customs, that but few Indians remain who remember them, and fewer still are those willing to divulge them. Only when one comes into intimate contact with them is one accorded the privilege and honor of hearing the tales of their ancestors.

From the Author’s Preface: I have told here the story of the last frontier within the United States, trying at once to preserve the picturesque atmosphere that has given to the “Far West” a definite and well-understood meaning and to indicate those forces which have shaped the history of the country beyond the Mississippi.

This book attempts to show that the Civil War was more than a succession of battles; it was a struggle between two civilizations... The motive for secession, slavery, was indefensible in the long run...It is reasonably clear today, that the South would have discarded slavery in another generation; and that the New Nationalism would have come about without the Civil War. Yet the war dominated the American mind for forty years and is worthy of study if only on this account.

Appleton and Company. Bancroft was U.S. Secretary of the Navy established the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. He was a senior American diplomat in Europe, leading diplomatic missions to Britain and Germany. His comprehensive study of the origins and development of the United States caused him to be referred to as the “Father of American history.”

Alexander Humphreys Woollcott (January 19, 1887 - January 23, 1943) was an American drama critic and commentator for The New Yorker magazine, a member of the Algonquin Round Table, an occasional actor and playwright, and a prominent radio personality. Benchley produced over 600 essays, which were initially compiled in twelve volumes, during his writing career. He also appeared in several films, including 48 short treatments that he mostly wrote or co-wrote and numerous feature films.

Frederick Jackson Turner was an American historian during the early 20th century. He was based at the University of Wisconsin-Madison until 1910 and then at Harvard University. He was known primarily for his frontier thesis. He trained many Ph. D.s who went on to become well-known historians. He promoted interdisciplinary and quantitative methods, often emphasizing the Midwestern United States.

Lewis Mumford (1895 - 1990) is an American historian, sociologist, philosopher of technology, and literary critic. Particularly noted for his study of cities and urban architecture, he had a broad career as a writer.

Yet,s Mr. Whitlatch—a golfer of reputation—goes so far as to set down as an axiom "The. more brains, the more strokes," and to work out from this rather startling premise a system that enables him to play the Oakland course with a gross score of 72. He also made a name for himself in Hollywood, when his short movie How to Sleep was a popular success and won Best Short Subject at the 1935 Academy Awards. Benchley produced over 600 essays, which were initially compiled in twelve volumes, during his writing career.
