What is a phrasal verb? A phrasal verb is when you take a verb and add a preposition, but the new combination doesn’t mean what either the original verb or preposition mean. So when someone says, “We will bring up that topic at the meeting,” it doesn’t mean someone is going to carry something upstairs! Instead, the phrasal verb “bring up” means to discuss something.

One of the more difficult things about working with native English speakers is their use of expressions, or idioms. What’s a “dog and pony show”? What does it mean to “leave someone in the lurch” or to “take a beating”? Unfortunately, you can’t stop English speakers from using these idioms, so you need to understand them yourself!
