B. J. Harrison does not tire of the adventurous and mysterious settings in his choice of narratives. This time, the horror element is a bit subdued, though Edgar Allan Poe makes up for the lost thrills with his haunting poems "The Raven", "Annabel Lee", and "The Sleeper". P. G. Wodehouse appears with four works, scoring points for his humor.

Apart from the ubiquitous presence of the authors who work in the short story tradition, the Second Season introduces poems and novellas. The romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge is here with his haunting and supernatural sea adventure "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner", while Rudyard Kipling tests the human condition with his famous poem "If". Perhaps the most potent addition in this second part is Joseph Conrad’s timeless novella "The Heart of Darkness", exploring the darkest recesses of the human soul. B. J.

One of the most famous short stories in horror fiction, "The Call of Cthulhu" sits next to the funny characters of "Right Ho, Jeeves" by Wodehouse, while the eponymous sleepyhead from "Rip Van Winkle" is very much awake, facing H. G. Wells’ "The Door in the Wall".

The first season focuses on the short story tradition, and B. J. Harrison has selected some of the most prominent representatives of the genre. As far as the thematic aspect is concerned, the stories cover crime and mystery episodes like Arthur Conan Doyle’s "The Speckled Band", or revenge-driven ones like Shakespeare’s "Hamlet". There are also supernatural and horror classics such as Hawthorne’s "The Devil and Tom Walker" and W. W. Jacobs’ masterpiece "The Monkey’s Paw".

Detective stories existed for centuries before the concept of the detective itself—amateur or professional— was fully formulated, and tales of mystery and intrigue have been thrilling readers since ancient times. Den 5. juli 1948 forsvandt den dengang 15-årige bogbinderlærling Henning Carøe Jensen sporløst under en cykelferie på Silkeborg egnen.

Et forsøg på væbnet bankrøveri, herunder forsøg på dobbelt manddrab, forøvet den 14. november 1974 kort før kl. 16.00 overfor en bankafdeling beliggende i tilslutning til Vejle Eksportstalde nær havnen i Vejle, skulle vise sig at få et helt usædvanligt opklaringsforløb, - hvilket ikke mindst beroede på differerende og i visse tilfælde direkte usande vidneudsagn.

Den 45-årige, enarmede Ahmet Alusan var en driftig mand, som havde skabt sig en agtet stilling på sin hjemegn, en lille landsby i Tyrkiet. Han var gift, ejede jord, forretning og penge. Hvor meget af den gode økonomi skyldtes hans illegale narkotikaaffærer unddrager sig nærmere bedømmelse. Men Ahmet var alligevel ikke tilfreds med sin lod i tilværelsen, han ville vinde mere gods og guld.

Det siges ofte, at vanen er menneskets halve liv, og det gælder også det kriminelle menneske, der ofte et helt liv igennem anvender samme fremgangsmåde under kriminelle handlinger, såsom indbrud, bedrageri, plattenslageri og lignende.

Havde drabet fundet sted i vore dage, havde det med den op gennem årene stadig stigende og i sin brutalitet stedse voksende vold næppe givet anledning til mere end en kortfattet omtale i dagspressen.

Under hensyn til, at udbyttet af udåden kun blev sølle 420 kroner til deling mellem de to gerningsmænd, kunne man vel på forhånd anse disse for endog særdeles afstumpede, men hertil må det dog retfærdighedsvis – hvis dette ord da kan benyttes i denne forbindelse, siges, at ugerningsmændene ikke uden grund havde regnet med et udbytte af helt anderledes omfang.

Mange forbrydelser kommer først efter lang tids forløb for dagens lys. Dette gælder blandt andet bedragerier, hvor der kan gå år, inden revisionen kommer til klarhed over stedfundne uregelmæssigheder. Mange tyverier erkendes ligeledes ofte efter længere tids forløb, og hvor der er tale om drab, og gerningsmanden har skjult sit offer, kan det ske, at dette aldrig findes eller først efter lang, lang tid – og ofte kun ved en tilfældighed, findes.

Da det første kup var gået godt og drømmen om en sorgløs tilværelse ved at gå i opfyldelse, tog man munden for fuld, og så gik det galt.

Fokus rettes i højere og højere grad mod virksomheder, der forurener vores omgivelser. I 1971 blev der i Nyborg på Fyn startet en virksomhed – A/S Kommunekemi – til destruktion af særligt farlige miljøgifte, og der er i Danmark fastsat regler om afleveringspligt for sådanne stoffer, som derefter forbrændes på virksomheden.

Når der begåes alvorlige forbrydelser, for eksempel: Drab, farlige røverier med anvendelse af våben, mordbrand og lignende, kommer politiet straks til stede, og der påbegyndes omfattende efterforskning med undersøgelser på gerningssted, personafhøringer i kvarteret og hos familie, og der tilkaldes tekniske afdelinger til assistance.

Bådbrand en nytårsaften på Lillebælt. En moder, hendes lille søn og yderligere to personer druknede. Hele Danmark var rystet. Men den eneste overlevende efter katastrofen gik på kro samme aften.
