Narrated by Mike Vendetti and Kathy Verduin, Cat in the Rain is not just about a cat. The cat can be taken at face value and surface-level as "just" a cat, and the events of the story as being a minor snapshot into one hour's events in the lives of an American couple living in 1920s Italy. But since when in our own lives do events simply happen without having wider implications? Many things we do are motivated by other desires, drives, wants, fears, and anxieties.

Borrowing its title from an old Anglican prayer, Ernest Hemingway’s In Our Time is a series of stories and vignettes that reflect on a world searching for peace after World War I. These stories span topics from passionate affairs between soldiers and nurses to the thrills and spectacle of bullfighting. Many of the stories in the collection are presenting as counterparts to one another, playing off of similar themes with different framing techniques.

One of Hemingway's Nick Adams stories, two hitmen from Chicago arrive at a diner to await the arrival of Ole Anderson a former boxer who "messed up" in Chicago. Dressed like twins complete with sawed-off shotguns under their overcoats, they plan to execute Anderson when he comes into the diner for dinner.

Hemingway claims he wrote The Torrents of Spring in ten days, concerning two men who work at a pump factory: World War I veteran Yogi Johnson, and writer Scripps O'Neill. Both are searching for the perfect woman, though they disagree over this ideal.

"Three-Day Blow'' is a short story that became a chapter from In Our Time. Jake (Hemingway's alter ego) hikes to his friend Bill's house where they spend the morning talking and drinking. The conversation is mostly chit-chat until the liquor loosens them up enough to discuss Jakes's breakup with Marjorie.

The story is about a 25-year-old Harvard student who follows a "clean" life. He marries a 40-year-old clean Southern woman and the two try very hard to have a baby. Eventually, both become disenchanted with each other, and the wife's girlfriend moves in to live with her.

As I listened to this, I couldn't help but compare Buggs and Ad to George and Lennie in Steinbeck's Mice and Men. Buggs protects Ad as George protected Lennie. Ad, though diminutive in size, as a former professional boxer could be as dangerous as Lennie when he had a crazy spell. Hemmingway portrays Buggs as the true leader of the group, highly intelligent, articulate, and gentle to his companion Ad while leading Ad to believe he is in charge.

In his unforgettable first novel, Hemingway artfully illuminates the plight of the Lost Generation, weaving a poignant tale of love and loss in the aftermath of World War I. The story follows two expatriates living in Paris in the 1920s: Jake Barnes, an American war veteran and journalist, and Lady Brett Ashley, an independent Englishwoman exploring the opportunities afforded by a new era of liberated women and sexual freedom. Impotent due to an injury suffered during the war, Jake must navigate his hopeless love for Brett in a changed world of waning morality.

Big Two-Hearted River features a single protagonist, Hemingway's recurrent autobiographical character Nick Adams, whose speaking voice is heard just three times. Hemingway explores the destructive qualities of war, but he also creates a great fishing story.

As feelings are hurt and punches are thrown, their lives and the lives of their friends and lovers become tangled as they journey from Paris to Spain and struggle with the repercussions that come from surviving the First World War.

Krebs, Hemingway's protagonist, leaves home a college kid and returns a very changed man. This story explores the extremely changed family dynamics within the Krebs family when Harold returns home. Roles switch from parent-child to adult/adult.

This 1923 In Our Time collection consists of 18 vignettes. Five center on World War I (Chapters 1, 4, 5, 7, 8), and six on bullfighting (Chapters 2 and 12 to 16); the others center around news stories. Chapter 10 is the longest; it details a soldier's affair with a Red Cross nurse, and is based on Hemingway's relationship with Agnes von Kurowsky. The piece about a robbery and murder in Kansas City originated in a newspaper story Hemingway covered as a cub reporter at The Kansas City Star; it is followed by the story of the public hanging of a Chicago mobster.

Att ha och inte ha handlar om fiskaren Harry Morgan, som kämpar för att hålla sig flytande och kunna försörja sin familj under 1930-talets depression. För att överleva tvingas han att ägna sig åt livsfarlig smuggling. Harrys hårda kamp för sin existens och familj ställs mot de rika yachtägarnas lyxliv, som består av ytliga bekymmer och neurotiska utsvävningar. Att ha och inte ha är kanske den mest spännande och samtidigt den mest sociala av Hemingways romaner.

Även om Hemingway är som mest känd för sina romaner, anser många att hans noveller är det bästa med hans författarskap. Novellerna i Snön på Kilimandjaro och andra noveller var inte med i hans första tre novellsamlingar och de kom ut samlade för första gången 1938 som en del av antologin The Fifth Column and First Forty-Nine Stories.
