Henry David Thoreau är en populär amerikansk författare, poet och filosof. Han var en livslång förkämpe, anhängare av civil olydnad againts orättvisa eller korrupta goverments och han försvarade tanken att lämna illusoriska saker till förmån för det enkla livet, för att upptäcka autentiska grundläggande behov i livet. Han är mest känd för Walden eller liv i skogen, den bok han skrev under sin tvååriga experiment i minimalistisk levande: byggde sig en stuga i skogen, han stannade där för att studera, skriva och njuta av hans nya gemenskap med naturen.

The Maine Woods is based on Henry David Thoreau’s lengthy experiences in the forests of Maine in the years 1846, 1853, and 1857. Thoreau describes the area in exquisite detail: the native people and their languages, the loggers and their labors, the rivers, the trees, the plants, and the birds. Experiencing all the joys of the woods, he padded in a canoe, climbed hills, and tried the local foods. The journey also makes him contemplative of his own weaknesses and strengths.

"On the Duty of Civil Disobedience", published by Henry David Thoreau in 1849, speaks eloquently and personally about one man's desire to live a peaceful, government-free life. In this short essay, Thoreau lays out his philosophy best summed up by the author as, "That government governs best that does not govern at all." Thoreau takes on the key issues of his day: slavery and the Mexican war.

Thoreau gives an account of three canoe and hiking journeys - by himself and with others - through the mostly uninhabited forests of Maine in the 1850s. Identifying birds, trees and plants by their botanical as well as their common names, he also records the Indian names of lakes, rivers and plants. He investigates the connections between waterways and trails, and provides detail on camping, fishing and hunting in the woods, using whatever is at hand. Extolling the beauty of the wilds that he encounters, Thorough’s narrative is also imbued with elements of his philosophy.

En este escrito Thoreau explica los principios básicos de la desobediencia civil que él mismo puso en práctica: en el verano de 1846 se negó a pagar sus impuestos por lo que fue detenido y encerrado en la prisión de Concord. Él se justificó explicando que se negaba a colaborar con un Estado que mantenía el régimen de esclavitud y emprendía guerras injustificadas, en aquel caso concreto contra México.

"Civil Disobedience" is an essay by Henry David Thoreau. Published in 1849 under the title "Resistance to Civil Government", it expressed Thoreau’s belief that people should not allow governments to overrule or atrophy their consciences, and that people have a duty both to avoid doing injustice directly and to avoid allowing their acquiescence to enable the government to make them the agents of injustice. Thoreau was motivated in part by his disgust with slavery and the Mexican-American War.

I heartily accept the motto, "That government is best which governs least"; and I should like to see it acted up to more rapidly and systematically. Carried out, it finally amounts to this, which also I believe, "That government is best which governs not at all"; and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have. In 1839, two years after graduating from Harvard, Henry David Thoreau and his older brother, John, took a boat-and-hiking trip from Concord, Massachusetts, to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. After John's sudden death in 1842, Thoreau began to prepare a memorial account of their excursion during his stay at Walden Pond. Modern listeners have come to see Thoreau's story of the river journey as an appropriate predecessor to Walden, depicting the early years of his spiritual and artistic growth.

Compiled from magazine articles published in the 1850s after his death, Cape Cod details several short trips Thoreau made to "the bare and bended arm of Massachusetts" between 1849 and 1855.
