Frankl trekker i logoterapien, som han utviklet på bakgrunn av sine tre år som konsentrasjonsleirfange. In fünf Vorträgen und ausführlichen Gesprächen begründet Viktor E. Frankl seinen wissenschaftlich-therapeutischen Ansatz. Wir leiden vielfach an einem existenziellen Vakuum, das die innere Leere und Sinnlosigkeit massiv werden lässt. Dafür sind zwei Gründe maßgeblich: der Instinkt- und der Traditionsverlust. Weil der Mensch nichts mehr muss und nichts mehr soll, weiß er nicht mehr, was er will. Das Sinnlosigkeitsgefühl schafft noogene Neurosen, Heilung erreicht man nur durch Sinnverwirklichung. Nietzsche hat dies so formuliert: Wer ein Warum zum Leben hat, erträgt jedes Wie.

Elf Monate nach seiner Befreiung aus dem Konzentrationslager hielt Viktor E. Frankl im März 1946 eine Reihe von Vorträgen an der Volkshochschule des Wiener Arbeiterbezirks Ottakring. Der Psychologe, der später weltberühmt werden sollte, erklärte seine zentralen Gedanken zu Lebenssinn und Resilienz. Ausgehend von seiner eigenen Maxime "Lebe so, als ob du zum zweiten Male lebtest", entfaltet Frankl seine Grundüberzeugung, dass Menschsein in jeder Lebenslage Auch-anders-Können bedeutet.
