Philip K. Dick was an award-winning giant of American science fiction, right up there with Ray Bradbury and Isaac Asimov. He became the first science fiction writer ever to be included in The Library of America series. In "The Hanging Stranger", TV salesman Ed Loyce is a practical man who, when he sees something wrong, tries to correct it. Then one day he sees a lifeless body hanging in the town square. What he can't figure out is why nobody seems to care.

In "Beyond Lies the Wub", the crew of a spaceship buys a "wub", a large pig-like animal from a native martian to eat on the way home. The Wub turns out to be a sentient being capable of intelligent conversation, empathy, and possibly telepathy and mind control. The Crawlers is a science fiction short story by American writer Philip K. Dick. Submitted under the title Foundling Home, it was first published as The Crawlers in Imagination magazine, July 1954. The story starts out from the point of view of a crawler constructing one of its curious hives. The crawler seems sentient and to genuinely enjoy building its odd dwelling. The story is set in a small Midwestern town, with references later in the story to mysterious "pools" which seem to cause mutations.

In "Follia per sette clan" Dick si tramuta, in quanto scrittore di fantascienza, in psicologo/ psichiatra che utilizza la sua creatura letteraria come atto terapeutico sia per i suoi personaggi che per i lettori, organizzando un viaggio dentro le psicosi della mente, o meglio – grazie alla duttilità della fantascienza – su Alfa III L2, una luna ospitante i ‘lunatici’, vale a dire, non coloro colpiti da malattia provocata (come una volta si credeva) dal mutamento dei cicli lunari, bensì coloro che, diagnosticati ‘folli’ sulla terra, sono stati allontanati (allunati?) su un satellite remoto e isolato.
