Die Geschichte schildert das Schicksal von Gregor Samsa, der eines Morgens als Ungeziefer erwacht – und mit der Entfremdung seiner Familie und der eigenen Isolation konfrontiert wird. Kafkas Erzählung ist zugleich beklemmend, grotesk und tiefgründig, eine zeitlose Reflexion über Menschlichkeit, Schuld und Ausgrenzung.

Dessen Vaterkonflikt trat nie offener zutage als in seinem berühmten Brief an den Vater, der allerdings nie abgeschickt wurde. Noch heute ein unabdingbarer Bestandteil der Schullektüre!

A transformação (Die Verwandlung, 1915) foi publicada originariamente na revista expressionista Weiße Blätter, que abrigava textos da nova geração de escritores alemães como Heinrich Mann, Ernst Bloch e Rosa Luxemburgo. A novela narra a singular história de Gregor Samsa, um caixeiro viajante que certo dia acorda em sua cama transformado em inseto. Plena de significados simbólicos, a obra deu origem às mais diversas interpretações.

Drei der außergewöhnlichsten Erzählung von Franz Kafka: "Der Bau": Ein nicht näher bestimmtes Wesen, offensichtlich ein dachsähnliches Tier, hat sich einen vielfältig gestalteten unterirdischen Bau errichtet. Er dient als Schutz und gut bestückte Vorratsräumlichkeit. Das Tier wird beherrscht von der Vorstellung, sich gegen einen wie auch immer gearteten Feind durch eine Optimierung des Baues schützen zu können. Zunächst ist das Tier sehr zufrieden in seinem Bau. Es schlummert häufig friedlich darin und frisst von seinen Vorräten, aber auch vom Kleingetier, das mit im Bau haust.

The first of Kafka’s three great novels, The Man Who Disappeared (America) follows the picaresque adventures of Karl Rossman, who is banished to America following a family scandal. Upon his arrival, Karl immediately happens upon his uncle, and from there follows a pattern of wandering, adoption and expulsion as Karl marches inexorably on towards the interior of the continent. With its blitheness and comical moments, The Man Who Disappeared is perhaps the most charming of Kafka’s works.
