"Nie mehr Psychologie" heisst es bei Kafka in den Oktav- heften. Gleichwohl: Der Brief an den Vater ist das Dokument einer sublimen psychologischen Hellsichtigkeit. In Andeutungen schildert der Sohn das für ein ganzes Leben Unglaubliche: Den unwiderstehlichen Drang des doch so kraftvollen Vaters aus dessen geheimem Gefühl der Inferiorität seinen eigenen Sohn zu demütigen und zu depravieren.

Kafkas Dichtungen sind, so Thomas Mann, "oft ganz und gar im Charakter des Traumes konzipiert und gestaltet; sie ahmen die alogische und beklommene Narretei der Träume, dieser wunderlichen Schattenspiele des Lebens, zum Lachen genau nach" und bedürfen bei der sprecherischen Wieder-Holung sowohl tiefer Einfühlung als auch zugleich persönlicher Zurücknahme. Nur im sprecherischen Nachempfinden dieser für Kafka spezifischen Methodik wird möglich, was Albert Camus beschreibt: dass der Zuhörende "an die Grenzen des menschlichen Denkens versetzt" wird. Zwei Verwandlungen werden in Kafkas humorvoll-erschreckender Erzählung beschrieben: die Gregor Samsas, als Andeutung auch eines "coming out", und die der Schwester Grete Samsa, die in dem Bruder nurmehr das Untier sehen will, das dem Leben im Wege steht. Indem sie Zweifel und Mitleid abstreift, ihren Blick mit kühler Distanz überzieht, sagt sie sich von ihrem Bruder los und reduziert ihn zum entmenschlichten Neutrum, zur Sächlichkeit des "es". "Weg muß es" rief die Schwester, "das ist das einzige Mittel, Vater. Du mußt bloß den Gedanken loszuwerden suchen, daß es Gregor ist.

"Es gestaltet sich in Kafkas Erzählung ein ursprünglicher Trieb zur Güte aus, kein Ressentiment, sondern etwas von der verschütteten Leidenschaft des Kindesalters für das Gute; jenes Gefühl aufgeregter Kindergebete (...) und viel, wofür man keinen anderen Ausdruck als moralische Zartheit bilden kann.

"Letzthin bei Felix. Auf dem Nachhauseweg sagte ich Max, daß ich auf dem Sterbebett vorausgesetzt daß die Schmerzen nicht zu groß sind, sehr zufrieden sein werde. K. is a land surveyor who arrives in a remote village with the hope of securing a position working for the mysterious Castle that looms over the settlement. But his attempts to gain access to the Castle are thwarted at every turn by confusing rules, indifferent officials, and an opaque system that seems designed to keep him out.

"The Great Wall of China" is a short story by Franz Kafka. While written in 1917, it was not published until 1930, seven years after his death. Its first publication occurred in Der Morgen, a German literary magazine. A year later, Max Brod included it in Beim Bau der Chinesischen Mauer, the first posthumous collection of short stories by Franz Kafka. Contained within the story is a parable that was separately published as "A Message from the Emperor" ("Eine kaiserliche Botschaft") in 1919 in the collection Ein Landarzt (A Country Doctor).

"A Report to an Academy" is a short story by Franz Kafka, written and published in 1917. In the story, an ape named Red Peter, who has learned to behave like a human, presents to an academy the story of how he effected his transformation. The narrator, speaking before a scientific conference, describes his former life as an ape. His story begins in a West African jungle, in which a hunting expedition shoots and captures him. Caged on a ship for his voyage to Europe, he finds himself for the first time without the freedom to move as he will.

"A Hunger Artist" is a short story by Franz Kafka first published in Die neue Rundschau in 1922. The story was also included in the collection A Hunger Artist, the last book Kafka prepared for publication, which was printed by Verlag Die Schmiede shortly after his death. The protagonist, a hunger artist who experiences the decline in appreciation of his craft, is typically Kafkaesque: an individual marginalized and victimized by society at large.

"The Hunter Gracchus" is a short story by Franz Kafka. The story presents a boat carrying the long-dead Hunter Gracchus as it arrives at a port. The mayor of Riva meets Gracchus, who gives him an account of his death while hunting, and explains that he is destined to wander aimlessly and eternally over the seas. An additional fragment presents an extended dialogue between Gracchus and an unnamed interviewer, presumably the same mayor.Written in the first half of 1917, the story was published posthumously in Beim Bau der Chinesischen Mauer (Berlin, 1931).

"Jackals and Arabs" is a short story by Franz Kafka, written and published in 1917. The story was first published by Martin Buber in the German monthly Der Jude. A European traveler from the North, accompanied by Arab guides, is camped in the desert. When night falls, and the Arabs are at a distance, the traveler is accosted by talking jackals. The jackals speak of an age-old hatred for Arabs, whom they associate with uncleanliness. They relate a belief passed down from their ancestors, that a man such as the protagonist would be the one to "end the quarrel which divides the world in two".

"In the Penal Colony" is a short story by Franz Kafka written in German in October 1914, revised in November 1918, and first published in October 1919. As in some of Kafka's other writings, the narrator in this story seems detached from, or perhaps numbed by, events that one would normally expect to be registered with horror. Internal clues and the setting on an island suggest Octave Mirbeau's The Torture Garden as an influence.

The Metamorphosis is a story about a man who wakes up transformed into a bug and the repercussions it has on his life and the people around him. What does it all mean? It is most probably an autobiography of how Kafka himself experienced early life living with his parents. Kafka describes how he endured his mother and father's financial and emotional exploitations, to the point of detaching from them and thereby ceasing to be their son (the real metamorphosis).
