Dieser erste Satz aus Franz Kafkas Erzählung Die Verwandlung gilt völlig zu Recht als einer der besten Romananfänge der Literaturgeschichte. Dabei gibt es im Grunde nichts Langweiligeres als eine Geschichte morgens mit dem Aufwachen des Hauptprotagonisten beginnen zu lassen. Doch Gregor Samsa wacht nicht einfach auf – nein, er "erwacht" und zwar aus "unruhigen Träumen".

Franz Kafka was born on 3rd July 1883 in Prague, then in Bohemia, the eldest of 6, into a middle-class Jewish family. Life for the young Kafka and his passion for literature was often made an ordeal by his over-bearing and domineering entrepreneur of a father. His literary works are few in number but towering in influence. His masterpieces include ‘The Trial’, ‘The Metamorphosis’ as well as a number of short stories which reveal facets of humankind that truthfully could only be born from Kafka’s brain and pen.

Franz Kafka was one of the first and greatest masters of dystopian literature. In his bleak world view, man is presented as helpless and ineffectual, his destiny determined by distant, obscure and essentially unfriendly agencies. In none of his works is this savage and unreasoning enslavement presented more vividly than in Metamorphosis, a novella in which Gregor Samsa, a respectable employee and dutiful son, wakes to find himself transformed into a gigantic insect.

"Die Verwandlung" ist eine im Jahr 1912 entstandene Erzählung von Franz Kafka.
