In the world, people look at success principally from the angle of what a person has done. What he is, is of secondary importance. In the kingdom of God, who a person is is crucial and what he does is only an overflow of what he is. God looks at success, first of all, from the point of who we are and only secondarily from what we do. What someone who is rightly related to the Lord does, and another who is out of touch with the Lord does, are miles apart before God.

People must be led. When there is a leader, he is followed. The spiritual leader is the one who has made the most progress in knowing God and is serving Him. Such a person has authority with God which no one can take away from him. No one can remove him from leadership. No one can put him into leadership. His intimate knowledge of God, his close walk with Him, his sacrificial service for the Lord and His people, put him apart from the others, and those who want true spiritual leadership turn to him. This is my understanding of spiritual leadership.

The messages in this book were given as the last of a series of meetings called leadership courses for the people of God in Cameroon. At the time of preparing the messages I felt that I owed it to the Lord and his people to say all that was on my heart in case it was not possible for the audience to hear me in the future. I thought I should say my last word to the Church. Here it is. I have borrowed extensively from the thoughts of Watchman Nee in writing the message “The Cross and Our Priorities.” I believe that the Cross is central in the life and ministry of the believer.

The thought of many is that when a person is saved, God forgives him and wipes away all the consequences of his past sins - that he is free. His freedom is so complete that he has no responsibility to rightly terminate with the past and to carry out restitution to those he wronged then. There was a real increase in numbers of those who were turning away from their sins and becoming new creatures in Christ. Many young people were beginning to receive ministry gifts and to minister in the churches. There was a need for a fresh look at the ministry and the ministers as revealed in the New Covenant.

Discipleship is a very costly business, and in moments of severe trials, one may be tempted to ask, “Why go into all this trouble of suffering with Christ? Why not give up? Is there any reward?” A disciple of Christ is a person who has, first of all, received the Lord Jesus Christ as his or her personal Savior and is therefore reconciled to God, and, secondly, has set his whole heart, mind, and all to seek him.

I recently spent one month in one of the leading countries of the world whose population is said to be 25 percent Christians. Yes, the claim is that one out of every four people is born again. I was also told that the divorce rate was skyrocketing. One minister even told me that the divorce rate among believers was just as high as the one among the unsaved.
