Ausgangspunkt ist dabei die Kindheit und dann die Jugend der "Tinnes Martha" in ihrem Eifeldorf in den 40-er bis 60-er Jahren. Anschaulich erzählt Roos vom frühen Tod der Mutter, und davon, dass der Vater nun sieben Kinder allein ernähren musste.

Dinahs Großeltern sind arabischer und marokkanischer Herkunft. Sie und ihre Eltern wurden in Deutschland geboren und leben dort in einer Doppelhaushälfte am Rande einer Kleinstadt. Die Nachbarschaft registriert alles, was bei Dinahs Familie geschieht und versteht wenig. Bald kommt es zu ersten Vorwürfen, dann hören die gegenseitigen Besuche auf. Nur Nachbarstochter Kati kommt weiterhin. Zu Ramadan kommt die Großmutter aus Marokko. Dinah beschließt, mit ihr zu fasten. Kati fastet mit, aus Protest gegen ihre Eltern, aber auch, weil sie sich von den Regeln der Religion angezogen fühlt.
