Jeho otcem je Kazan, ze čtvrtiny vlk, ze tří čtvrtin severský vlčák. Jeho matkou je Šedka, vlčice, se kterou se dal Kazan dohromady, když utekl od lidí a připojil se k vlčí smečce. Napůl vlk, napůl pes, Barí se už jako štěně zatoulá v divočině. Popere se se sovou, zachrání bobra. Loví si jídlo a hledá cestu domů. Jednoho dne potká lidi.
