First published as the 1848 revolutions erupted throughout Europe, this revolutionary political tract articulated an entirely new understanding of governments and history. The manifesto outlined a radical, new political agenda that would lead to an equal and classless society. In one of the most powerful political pamphlets ever written, Marx and Engels predicted that Europe was on the verge of revolution.

The publication in 1848 of The Communist Manifesto came at a time when industrialization was reaching its peak, and signs of the cost to the working class blatant; the Revolutions of 1848 were just getting under way. Marx and Engels shared the belief that "the history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles" and this notion formed a central part of the manifesto they crafted together. They believed that industrialization was simply a new form of struggle among the classes - the price paid by the lower class still high.

This is certainly the edition you want to get. It has the full text of the Manifesto as written and published in 1848, plus a brief modern commentary which can be used to demonstrate the failure of the Communist system. The original text is the classic that steered many hundreds of millions into Communist revolutions around the world. They have all failed or are in the process of failing. The ones which have not failed are slowly yielding to the reality that capitalism is the driver of innovation and prosperity.

In the speech, Engels claimed that the name of Marx would “endure through the ages, and so also will his work.” The book also includes a summary of all the contributions by Karl Marx in building the theory of Communism.
