Daphne du Mauriers Erzählung "The Birds" erschien 1952 in ihrem Kurzgeschichten-Band "The Apple Tree". Eine plötzliche "Neuauflage" der Naturgesetze erfährt in der Story Nat Hocken, Landarbeiter in Cornwall: Große Mengen Vögel sammeln sich über der See und in der folgenden Nacht über seinem Haus. Nat wird attackiert. Im Dorf nimmt den Vorfall niemand weiter ernst. Der extreme Wetterwechsel wird die Tiere irritiert haben.
