『이 세상에 태어나길 참 잘했다』는 경제 위기로 가정이 해체되어 가는 우리 사회에 가족의 소중함과 사랑을 주제로, 이 사회의 기둥이 될 어린이들을 위한 특별한 성장동화입니다. 태어나자마자 어머니가 돌아가시고, 아버지마저 떠난 후에 이모와 외할머니 품에서 자라게 되는 초등 5학년 '김복동'이 주인공입니다. 복동이가 미국에서 새로운 가정을 일구고 있는 아버지를 만나게 되면서, 서로의 존재와 가정이 무엇인가를 생각하게 합니다. 새로운 가족(필리핀계 어머니와 이복 동생들)을 만나면서 처음에는 서로의 존재를 이해하는 것이 쉽지 않습니다. 하지만 그들은 차츰 서로의 존재를 받아들이며, 이 세상의 생명에는 다 뜻이 있으며, 어느 것 하나 하잘 것 없는 것이 없고, 생명을 잉태해 준 가족의 소중함을 깨닫게 됩니다.
