Questo romanzo scritto nel 1917, narra della crisi spirituale di un vescovo anglicano, proprio durante la guerra, in cui visioni soprannaturali, indotte casualmente da una droga somministratagli inconsapevolmente, lo portano a superare i particolarismi delle varie confessioni per arrivare ad una fede più pura.
