Queste raccolta completa di lettere scritte dalla Austen, (159), sono indirizzate quasi sempre alla sorella Cassandra, nei brevi periodi in cui non vivevano insieme. Molte sono state in gran parte distrutte da quest'ultima dopo la morte di Jane; pertanto dobbiamo prendere le lettere per quello che sono, senza aspettarci di trovarvi espressioni di soggetti privati come sentimenti, religione, politica. Ma queste istantanee di vita quotidiana, una dopo l'altra, hanno il potere di introdurci un po' alla volta nel suo mondo privato.

Questo breve romanzo epistolare fu pubblicato postumo nel 1871, ma si suppone che sia stato scritto presumibilmente nel 1794.
