I 1800-tallets London eksperimenterer den anerkendte læge og forsker Dr. Jekyll med en mikstur, som skal kunne skille hans gode sider fra de dårlige. Men med eksperimenterne slipper han istedet en ond side af sig selv løs. En side som får et liv og en krop for sig selv under navnet Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll får dog stadig sværere ved at kontrollere denne Mr. Hyde, som efterhånden får lov at tage mere og mere over... Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 - 1894) var forfatter og journalist, født og opvokset i Skotland. Han skrev flere romaner, som siden har fået udødelig klassikerstatus-

Ein Herr namens Markheim betritt einen Antiquitätenladen. Angeblich um seiner Verlobten ein Geschenk auszusuchen. Als der Händler sich umdreht, ersticht ihn Markheim scheinbar grundlos. Der Mann scheint gesitig verwirrt zu sein und sucht im Laden nach wertvollen Gegenständen. Als plötzlich ein mysteriöser Fremder auftaucht, der behauptet Markheim zu kennen, bekommt Markheim es mit der Angst zu tun.

I efteråret 1878 tog forfatteren Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) på en tolv dages vandring gennem den franske bjergkæde Cevennerne. Året efter udgav han med stor succes rejsedagbogen fra den tur, "Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes". Rejsedagbogen udgives nu for første gang på dansk og det i Niels Brunses oversættelse.

El joven Markheim entra en una tienda de antigüedades para comprar un regalo a su prometida, ahora que se acerca la Navidad. El dueño de la tienda le enseña un bello espejo de plata, pero cuando Markheim ve reflejado su rostro en él, inmediatamente lo rechaza, porque de alguna manera ha visto reflejado en el espejo la maldad que siente en su interior.

"Markheim" es un relato sobre un motivo constante en la obra de Stevenson: el demoniocomo forma depurada de la presencia del mal en el mundo. Markheim, sin embargo, le mira como a un ser "que no procedía ni de la tierra ni de Dios", pero, de cualquier modo, ligado al mal.El demonio acude al asesinato cometido por Markheim, como buitre a su carroña. El protagonista de la obra rechaza la ayuda "No haré nada que me ligue voluntariamente al mal". El mal de Markheim, su pecado, es el de una naturaleza humana contradicha, el de un hombre, como otros, a quien la vida "lleva a rastras", porque es "el pecador que no quiere serlo".

El pobre Dr. Jekyll, en persecución de sus afanes científicos y con la alegría que produce esa epifanía del descubrimiento, se va a dar cuenta tarde de algo que jamás se habría imaginado.

Kurz danach findet er Janet erhängt in Ihrem Zimmer. Schließlich steht ihr Leichnam vor ihm.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is the original title of a novel written by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson that was first published in 1886. It is about a London lawyer named Gabriel John Utterson who investigates strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll and the misanthropic Edward Hyde.
