Per tentare di vincere una scommessa fatta con i soci del suo Club, parte in fretta e furia, assieme al suo domestico Passepartout, per un viaggio praticamente impossibile: il giro del mondo in non più di ottanta giorni. Sorprendono e incuriosiscono i resoconti dei progressi tecnologici del diciannovesimo secolo: i mezzi di trasporto erano già molto efficienti.

Russia, fine XIX secolo: il romanzo racconta il viaggio affrontato dal corriere dello Zar Michele Strogoff, inviato da Mosca a Irkutsk, capitale della Siberia orientale. La sua missione è avvisare il Granduca, fratello dello Zar, dell'imminente arrivo dell'orda dei Tartari guidata dal traditore russo Ivan Ogareff e dal feroce Feofar Khan.
