"The Cone" is a short story by H. G. Wells, first published in 1895 in Unicorn. It was intended to be "the opening chapter of a sensational novel set in the Five Towns", later abandoned. The story is set at an ironworks in Stoke-on-Trent, in Staffordshire. An artist is there to depict the industrial landscape; the manager of the ironworks discovers his affair with his wife, and takes him on a tour of the factory, where there are dangerous features.

In "Der Gasfang" werden wir Zeuge der grausamen Rache eines betrogenen Ehemannes, der sich kurzerhand zum moralischen Faschisten erhebt und den Liebhaber seiner Frau in einer Art geplanten Kurzschlussreaktion bestialisch hinrichtet. "Ein Straußenhandel" berichtet von einem gewitzten Gauner-Duo, welches während einer Schifffahrt auf amüsantem Weg einen kleinen Nebenverdienst erzielt.

In "Paycrafts Kur" nervt ein von Komplexen zerfressenes Individuum ein Londoner Club-Mitglied so lange bis er von diesem ein altes Rezept seiner Urgroßmutter als Lösung seiner Probleme dargeboten bekommt - die erhoffte Wirkung stellt sich alsbald auch ein, allerdings so ganz anders als erwünscht. "Im Tal der Spinnen" erzählt die Geschichte dreier Verfolger einer Dirne, die auf ihrer Jagd von einer Art mutierten Riesenspinnen-Armada angegriffen werden.

In "Jimmy Goggles der Gott" macht ein junger Abenteurer die höchst interessante, praktische und aberwitzige Erfahrung, dass Wahrheit und Gottesglaube von Region zu Region variieren und immer lediglich in der Wahrnehmung und Vermittlung der entsprechenden Perspektiven und Blickwinkel liegen. "Tiefseepiraten" berichtet von einer bislang unbekannten Meeresungeheuer-Art, welche vermutlich aus diversen Gründen sich dazu entschließt Menschenfleisch auf ihre Speisekarte zu setzen.

"Ein Nachtfalter" erzählt die Geschichte zweier konkurrierender Wissenschaftler, die sich jeweils für die treibende Primärkraft in ihrer Disziplin halten und rücksichtslos den jeweils anderen mit Argumenten und Verleumdungen zerstören wollen. Einer der beiden stirbt und sein ehemaliger Erzfeind entdeckt das Gesicht des Verstorbenen in einer neuen Insekten-Spezies... "Mr. Ledbetters Urlaub" zeigt die Schwierigkeiten auf, mit welcher eine Person konfrontiert wird, welche sich auf ihr fremdes Terrain wagt bzw. wie aus einem "das kann ich doch auch" ganz schnell ein "was um alles in der Welt passiert hier" wird.

In "Der gestohlene Körper" wagen zwei Wissenschaftler ein mutiges Experiment, während dessen sie die Gegenstände Gedankenübertragung und körperunabhängiges Seelenleben empirisch zu beweisen trachten und kommen zu Ergebnissen, die faszinierender und realistischer erscheinen als die plumpen religiösen Baukästen-Antworten. "Die Äpyornisinsel" berichtet von einem ehemaligen Seemann, der mehrere urzeitliche Eier findet, aus welchen aus einem auch tatsächlich ein Relikt vergangener Ur-Zeiten wiederaufersteht.
