The famous phrase of the writer: "Brevity is the sister of talent", could not be more suited to the work of Anton Chekhov himself. One right stroke to mark the character, with apt word to say about the main thing, to precisely place accents and draw a bright three-dimensional picture in just a few minutes is the work of the wizard. No one is as amused as Chekhov, and no one is so sad as he. The collection includes selected stories and stories in which the classic, who entered the history of literature under the frivolous pseudonym Antosha Chekhonte, draws eternal characters that invariably amaze with their psychological nude.

"Kashtanka," a shaggy-dog story penned by Anton Chekhov in seven parts and first published in 1887, relates the experiences of its eponymous heroine, a fox-faced, reddish dachshund-mix, whose name means 'little chestnut.' After her detestation of music causes her to become separated from the carpenter with whose family she had been living, Kashtanka finds herself taken up by an unusual vaudevillian and goes to live among an assortment of other intelligent animals, each of whom is observed with the characteristic empathy and humor that stamp Chekhov's work. The only full-length novel which Chekhov authored, The Shooting Party revolves around Olga, the pretty young daughter of a drunken worker on a country estate, and her relationships with the men in her life. Loved by Urbenin, whom she eventually marries; desired by the Count Karneyev; and adored by Zinovyev, who knows the sadness at the heart of her marriage, a murderous attack begins a spiral of alarm, mistrust, and deceit.
