Wohlbehalten in New York angekommen, möchte sich Holmes' Leibarzt Doktor Watson auf einige gemütliche Urlaubstage in der „Neuen Welt" einstellen. Doch dazu kommt es nicht. Zeitungsberichte bestätigen, dass ein fürchterlicher Brand aus der jüngeren Vergangenheit noch nicht ganz geklärt ist. Sherlock Holmes würde dies nicht besonders beunruhigen, wenn nicht mehr als hundertfünfzig Menschen damals zu Tode gekommen worden wären.

Er wollte Holmes unbedingt an seinem nächsten Tatort mitten im Central Park dabei haben. Dann war da noch Ruth Hampton, die Witwe des ermordeten Bankiers Benjamin Hampton, die eigentlich nur ihr Erbe retten wollte. Bis ihr übereifriger Bruder ihr ungewollt einen Strich durch die gut geplante Rechnung macht und selber zum Täter wird. Holmes und Watson sind in Amerika so weit entfernt von einem echten Urlaub, wie von der Baker Street in London.

Als Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson nur durch Zufall einem Brandanschlag im Waldorf Hotel entgehen, sind sie froh, im Apartment der Hampton Bank eine neue Herberge gefunden zu haben. Direktor Benjamin Hampton, der sich immer noch in Holmes Schuld wähnt, freut sich, dass beide nun offenbar sicher vor dem langen Arm der Vergeltung durch die New Yorker Polizei sind. Gerade deswegen konfrontiert er Holmes mit einem Fall, der besonderer Sorgfalt bedarf: ein geheimes Banken-Treffen in Bundesstaat Georgia sollte geheim bleiben.

Hinter einem „gewöhnlichen Mord" auf einer Ferieninsel im Bundesstaat Georgia stand offenbar doch eine tieferliegende Intrige, die Sherlock Holmes ganz und gar nicht vermutet hatte. Bankdirektor Benjamin Hampton, der immer noch in der Rolle des Gönners von Watson und Holmes auftritt und den beide aus London gut kennen, scheint plötzlich doch keine ganz so weiße Weste mehr zu haben. Holmes kann Watson aber erst von seinem Argwohn überzeugen, als Hampton in seinem eigenen Büro vom FBI verhaftet wird.

Sherlock Holmes wähnt sich selbst schon im sicheren Hafen eines wohlverdienten Feierabends, nachdem er bei Sergeant Travis vom New Yorker Polizei Dezernat erneut zur Lösung eines äußerst merkwürdigen Falles beigetragen hat. Doch als er es sich am späten Nachmittag im Museum vor Kandinskys „Rauchenden Schloten" bequem macht, bekommt er Besuch von einer neuen Bekannten. Für Lady Pullman ist der Mord an ihrem Ehemann, dem ehemaligen Bankier James Pullman noch längst nicht abgeschlossen und damit auch nicht ihr Interesse an Sherlock Holmes' Talenten.

Sherlock Holmes hat durch Zufall in der New York Times erfahren, dass die New Yorker Polizei immer noch über den ungeklärten Brand in einer Textilfabrik ermittelt, bei dem über hundertfünfzig Näherinnen ums Leben gekommen waren, weil sie nicht aus dem Gebäude vor den Flammen fliehen konnten. Als Holmes vom Ehemann einer Frau, die noch mit Verletzungen im Spital liegt, darauf angesprochen wird, erklärt er sich bereit, den Unfallort zu inspizieren.

Als Holmes an einem drückenden Sommertag mit seinen Bekannten auf Coney Island spazieren geht, hätte er nie vermutet, dass ihn der Fluch von Auburn noch einmal einholen würde. Der ermordete Bankier James Pullman hinterlässt seine attraktive Frau und zwei kleine Kinder, die sich offenbar alle gerne in dieser Affäre an Holmes wenden. Er ist sich bewusst, dass Lady Pullman ein Opfer all dieser Machenschaften ist, da sie offenbar über keinerlei Einzelheiten Bescheid wusste. Aber könnte sie auch Täterin sein? Denn, was hatte ihr Kutscher und Hausdiener im Gefängnis von Auburn zu suchen?
