Jane Austen's early novels are a comic portrait of characters and society. Pride and Prejudice depicts late 18th-, early 19th-century England where the social class system was very rigid. Behavior was very important, especially for women who were hoping to find a husband, and having good behavior meant sticking to the right manners and right forms of address. Everyone watched everyone else and noted even tache slightest changes in mannerism, so it was very important to use the right manners all the time. This applied to women much more than to men.

La jeune Catherine Morland, fille de pasteur, ingénue, profite d'une invitation pour faire ses premiers pas auprès la bonne société dans la ville d'eau de Bath. Les sœurs aînées, Elinor et Maria, l'une plus raisonnable, l'autre plus sentimentale vont vivre leur premiers émois amoureux non sans quelques revers.

Persuasion is Jane Austen's last completed novel. She began it soon after she had finished Emma and completed it in August 1816. She died, at age 41, in 1817; Persuasion was published in December of that year (but dated 1818). Persuasion is linked to Northanger Abbey not only by the fact that the two books were originally bound up in one volume and published together, but also because both stories are set partly in Bath, a fashionable city with which Austen was well acquainted, having lived there from 1801 to 1805.

Northanger Abbey was the first of Jane Austen's novels to be completed for publication, though she had previously made a start on Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice.

Persuasion has certain similarities with Emma, another late novel by Jane Austen. In both stories, the heroine is a young woman who lives with her widowed father, and who has an enduring attachment to her eventual spouse from the opening of the action. Persuasion also incorporates certain elements common to Austen's earlier novels, such as characters from the military, visits to Bath and calculating and cynical suitors. In the end, Anne Elliot successfully combats the destructive vanity of her father and the machinations of her villainous cousin William.

Jane Austen's first novel, Northanger Abbey, published posthumously in 1818, tells the story of Catherine Morland and her dangerously sweet nature, innocence, and sometime self-delusion. Though Austen's fallible heroine is repeatedly drawn into scrapes while vacationing at Bath and during her subsequent visit to Northanger Abbey, Catherine eventually triumphs, blossoming into a discerning woman who learns truths about love, life, and the heady power of literature. The satirical Northanger Abbey pokes fun at the Gothic novel while earnestly emphasizing caution to the female sex.

Lady Susan was first published decades after Austen's death. Written in letters, the selfish but entertaining Lady Susan and each of her correspondents come vividly to life, as do the family members of the fragment, The Watsons. This latter work was begun in 1875, but Austen never returned to it after her father's death.
