In this collection of heart-wrenching and life-affirming missions, we hear blow-by-blow descriptions of some of the most dramatic rescues from the last 20 years. We experience these through the eyes of the lifesavers as they must make life-or-death decisions, face fierce conditions and tackle difficult and dangerous situations. But we also see the optimism, passion and courage that is crucial to a successful rescue and experience the genuine joy felt by the volunteer crews and lifeguards in being a part of something so important.

When war was declared in 1939, Britain was almost completely dependent on imported timber – but only had seven months of it stockpiled. Timber was critical to the war effort: it was needed for everything from aircraft and shipbuilding to communications and coal mining. The British timber trade was in trouble. Enter the Lumberjills. Lacking in both men and timber, the government made a choice. Reluctantly, they opened lumber work for women to apply – and apply they did. The Women's Timber Corps had thousands of members who would prove themselves as strong and as smart as any man.

In August, eight friends gather at a house in the Cambridgeshire countryside for a week-long artists retreat. There is painting by the pool or writing in the shady corners of the garden and inside the spectacular 18th-century home. In the evenings, there are communal drinks, dinner outdoors, midnight swimming, games. But someone is playing a game the others don't understand, meddling with their work and appearing to lurk on the edges of the retreat. As tensions rise over the seven days, desire and deceit rise to the surface and all their lives will change forever.
