During her ten years as Director of Nursing at the health department in Parkdale, Missouri, Lacey Bookman thinks she has seen everything. That is until several cases of polio affecting children pop up in her community. Her nightmare begins with nerve-shattering swiftness the moment the case reports hit her desk. There hasn’t been a case of Type I Poliomyelitis reported in the United States since 1979. Now, not only has the eradicated disease mysteriously reappeared, it attacks children who are up-to-date on their polio immunizations.

Due to the pandemic, the St. Louis Homicide Division lack enough detectives to stop a serial killer who has murdered three people. The lead detective, Roger Simon, worked as Kate’s partner before she left the force. To solve the problem, he hires her agency to track down the killer. Never one to back away from a challenge, Kate and her partner, Amy Perkin, agree to take the case. Because the murders are committed in broad daylight and a white limousine is used as a getaway car, Kate believes they can easily catch the killer.
