Back burner items tend to remain on the back burner indefinitely. They rarely make it to the front burner on their own.

People often ask me to help them assess what their odds of success will be in some new endeavor: What are my odds of succeeding as a full-time blogger? On the surface it seems intelligent to assess your risks before embarking on a new venture. Unfortunately the way I’ve seen most people do this is rather silly.

You become an achiever by achieving your goals. If you achieve your goals, you're an achiever. If you don't achieve your goals, you're not an achiever. This is a simple, binary way to think about achievement. To achieve means to reach, attain, or accomplish. What you choose to reach, attain, or accomplish is up to you.

Many people fail with 30-day challenges, usually not making it past the first week. And the #1 reason for failure is that they didn't make a crystal clear commitment to do a specific activity for all 30 days. Giving your mind a clear enough commitment is a key to success with 30-day challenges.

If you aren't satisfied with your life today, yet you continue the same habits that got you here, you’ll still be dissatisfied next year, possibly even more so. Many habits may feel quite satisfying in the moment, but they have no long-term positive impact. They are temporary pleasures or escapes but nothing more. These habits tend to self-perpetuate automatically, but as you become more conscious and rational, you’ll discover the importance of replacing these short-sighted habits with better ones.

Limiting beliefs can seriously hold us back in life. But most of the time such beliefs are invisible to us. They control some of our thoughts and behaviors behind the scenes, enough to curtail our results in some area of life. For example, if you have the false belief that mistakes and failure are bad, then you’ll avoid many growth and learning experiences because you have to be willing to fail in order to build new skills.

Sometimes people dive into new projects because they really want to make some money or to "get something going". They put pressure on themselves to start a project mainly for the sake of trying to create some forward momentum. While forward momentum can be a beautiful thing, I would actually recommend against this approach. Usually when I see people try to motivate themselves like this, their projects fizzle out.

Many people have a hard time accepting the responsibility of being in control, so they yield this control to someone else. But no matter what, time is passing. You have the same number of days this month that anyone else has... You Have More Control Than You Think. Are you willing to take it?

Neurological imbalances can show up as psychological, behavioral, and motivational problems. If we try to treat these problems at the psychological or behavioral levels, however, we can’t effectively cure them because the problems have physical causes, such as a buildup of toxicity in the brain.

One of the most important relationship lessons I learned was this: The relationships we have with other people are projections of the relationships we have within ourselves.

Perhaps the most important step in quitting the habit of complaining is to disconnect the undesirable behavior from your identity. A common mistake chronic complainers make is to self-identify with the negative thoughts running through their minds.

The typical American office worker only does about 90 minutes of real work per workday. The rest of each workday is largely spent on distractions like reading the news, web surfing, socializing with coworkers, snacking, taking coffee breaks, shuffling papers around, processing irrelevant emails, needless delay tactics, playing games, and daydreaming. Moreover, American office workers are among the world’s most productive. In many other countries, even less work gets done each day. This stat hasn't changed much in decades.

Many people ask me how to develop a better connection to their desires, passions, and major life interests. I know that a lot of people feel bored, checked out, and unclear about what goals to pursue. Let me share some of my favorite shortcuts to help you figure out what drives you.

We are what we make ourselves to be. From one perspective we’re all separate individuals. From another perspective we can see ourselves as a unified whole. Imagine a gigantic sheet of aluminum foil with billions of tiny indentations in it, like protruding fingers. As individuals we’re the dents. Collectively we’re the foil. You can choose to adopt either perspective, or switch back and forth. As an individual your power is limited. You’re just a dent in a sea of other dents. But you have an interesting perspective on the whole sheet. No other dent sees the same picture you do.
