When Adam Cain's old bounty-hunting friends, Summer, Monty, and Tidus, show up searching for the most-wanted fugitive in the galaxy, their efforts are thwarted by another old friend, Copernicus Smith. The deep-cover spy has his own reason for finding the fugitive, and it's not to earn the million-credit bounty offered for his capture. The elusive alien absconded with billions of credits from his homeworld just before the Mad Aris Kracion irradiated the planet. And now it seems as though the entire galaxy is looking for him.

With the ancient Aris service module Kanan out of the picture - at least for a while - there's a lot for Marshal Adam Cain to tend to within the Dead Zone. The Scorched Earth in the title doesn't refer to the Human's homeworld. Rather it describes the path of death and destruction that Adam Cain burns on his way from Earth to the planet Juir as he seeks revenge for the killing of one of his closest friends. But there's more. Sherri and Arieel have been taken prisoner by the Juirean leader, with a date for their execution already set. The aliens may have thought Adam was dangerous before, but they ain't seen nothing yet.

When Adam and Riyad journey to the planet Visidor to help free their alien friends Kaylor and Jym from vindictive local law enforcement, they thought all it would take would be wowing the locals with their celebrity. If their mission succeeds, it could end the war with a single stroke, saving trillions upon trillions of innocent creatures from the ravenous, flesh-eating invaders. If not...

Every crisis has its beginning. For Adam Cain, his greatest challenge began in The Lost Universe and continued through The Immortal War. And to top it all off, the Sol-Kor have reached the point of no return in their search for their missing Queen-J'nae.

With the question lingering what happened to the evil Mad Aris Kracion, Adam and his team are preparing to follow the clues to an answer. But first, Adam takes a quick detour to help a stranded Summer, Monty, and Tidus get off the planet Sasin, the most dangerous place in the galaxy. It's a no big deal mission which quickly devolves into the beginning of the greatest challenge for Adam and his team. Both Adam and Summer are going through strange and not so subtle changes; Adam from the mind meld he did with the super mutant Panur, and Summer from her contact with the Essence of J'nae.

In the continuation of their last adventure, Adam and his team have returned from The Lost Universe with the evil and insane Aris being Kracion close on their tail. Now the mission becomes two-fold: Warn the galaxy of this new threat, while also on a quest to find the artificial planet of the Aris in time to save Lila and Panur from being assimilated by Kracion, making him the immortal god he's spent three billion years to become. If he's successful, no power in the galaxy can stop him . . . except maybe an ex-Navy SEAL from Southern California named Adam Cain . . .
