This collection of verse was first published in 1920. It contains 12 poems published in an earlier collection, Prufrock and Other Observations, in 1917, together with 12 later poems, four of which are in French. Both collections were dedicated to Jean Verdenal (1889-1915).

Published in 1922, the 434-line poem first appeared in the United Kingdom in the October issue of Eliot's The Criterion and in the United States in the November issue of The Dial. It was published in book form in December 1922. Eliot's poem loosely follows the legend of the Holy Grail and the Fisher King combined with vignettes of contemporary British society.

Thomas Stearns Eliot OM (26 Sept 1888 – 4 Jan 1965) was a poet, essayist, publisher, playwright, and literary and social critic. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, to a prominent Boston Brahmin family, he moved to England in 1914 at the age of 25 and went on to settle, work and marry there. He became a British subject in 1927 at the age of 39, subsequently renouncing his American citizenship.

Despite Eliot's comparative youth at the time (he was in his early thirties) each poem brilliantly captures different aspects of the profound effect of the aging process on human aspiration.
