De nationalité autrichienne, Sigmund Freud est le créateur de la science psychanalytique. Son œuvre constitue l'un des événements les plus importants qu'ait eu à enregistrer l'histoire des sciences de l'esprit. Cet essai traite des grandes lignes de la doctrine de l'auteur concernant l'Inconscient et le rôle capital dans la personnalité humaine des trois instances psychiques constitutives de l'esprit humain : Le Moi, le Ça et le Sur-Moi.

Il part d'un des premiers souvenirs d'enfance rapporté par le peintre. Pour Freud, il s'agit plutôt d'un fantasme, qu'il appellera "le fantasme au vautour", que Léonard "s'est construit plus tard et qu'il a alors rejeté dans son enfance" et qui se rapproche de certains "fantasmes de femmes ou d'homosexuels passifs".
