Happiness is not like a hamburger: You desire it, you pursue it, you acquire it, and now it’s in your hands. Life doesn’t work that way. Think, rather, of your car keys. Many times, you run around like crazy, looking for them, and then realize that they were in your pocket all the time. That’s the deal with happiness. It resides within you. You just have to stop, take a deep look within yourself, try to calm your inner demons of anger, lust, greed, desire, jealousy, and you will discover happiness.

What’s going on here? Why are my hands shaking and heart racing? The doc said my blood pressure is up a little. He claims it’s stress. What stress? Me, stressed out? As soon as I get the kids out the door, I’ll jump in my car and drive like crazy to get to my meeting on time. I guess I might be just a touch stressed out. If we want to avoid being so stressed out all the time, and we don’t like what chronic stress can do to us, we need to change course.

Growing old is not a crime. It is an achievement to be cherished. A well-lived life, with grace and dignity, is within the reach of most people. Society should embrace it. I am no spring chicken. And you won’t be either - one of these days. Should we meekly accept society’s verdict that youth is fantastic and then it’s downhill all the way? Or should we fight? To show the youngsters that we know a thing or two about the world that can help them. That we have fought more battles than they can think of and come out on top.

Societies have struggled with pandemics for thousands of years. Plague and cholera, smallpox and influenza; deadly diseases spring up, kill thousands, if not millions, and we still don’t learn. We make the same mistakes again and again. Defeating an infectious agent should not be complicated. The principles of public health are straightforward and have not changed for more than a hundred years.
