The Last Leaf is a short story by O. Henry published in his 1907 collection The Trimmed Lamp and Other Stories. The story first appeared on October 15, 1905, in the New York World. The scene of the story of The Last Leaf is the Greenwich artist colony in New York City. Over the past century, it has developed from a poor literati settlement to a world-famous art center and tourist attraction.

Did you know that O. Henry’s real name was William Sydney Porter? He had many pseudonyms, but is most known as "O. Henry". He wrote over 300 stories and is known for playfully writing a twist at their end. Most of them are based in New York, with characters being average Joes. A census stated there were about four million individuals living in New York City at the time, and that is how this volume of short stories received its name.
